To name a hurricane is the job of a large group of people. The names have to be approved by an international group called the World Meteorlogical Organization. The names are chosen from six lists and every six years the names can be reused. In the event a hurricane causes too much havoc, the name will be retired.

Hurricane names are weighted on the general area of where the storm originates, storm names are picked out six years previous.

The World Meteorological Organization chooses the names alphabetically. The WMO has six already made lists that are rotated each year. So after six years the hurricane names will begin to repeat. Hurricanes that are said to cause a lot of damage, like Katrina, aren't used twice, so another K name will fill the space.
