Its relatively common in the sense that it occurs in somewhere between 1-3% of all pregnancies, but rare in the sense that when it occurs the result is usually a spontaneous miscarriage or else death shortly after birth. A fetus that is polyploidic shows abnormal growth patterns, with the placenta particularly affected.

There are several variations of polyplodiy, which occur mainly in fish, salamanders and some plants. It is generally very rare in humans, however, it is usually present in some form or another in 2-3% of all pregnancies, and accounts for approximately 15% of all miscarriages.

Polyploidy is whenever there are more than two of any chromosome. Muscle cells are normally polyploids, most cancers contain some form of abnormal cell division, also people with trisomies.

I have yet to hear of this being a common occurance in the human body, however there are sparse cases interspersed around the globe where it is an issue for many.
