There are two main components to a brooder, a heat source and a way to contain the chicks. A heat lamp will work for the heat source.

Basically you need a space where there is little draft, protection from predators and you can hang a heating lamp. The details are up to you. I use ply board and screws to make a box that is just deep enough for me to reach into. The screws make it collapsible and reusable, ply board is inexpensive.

A handmade brooder can be made by taping three cardboard boxes together that are roughly the same size. Then add a heating lamp, blanket, food and water to the brooder that you made.

Brooders can consist of sterilite plastic tubs with a heat lamp attached, fish tanks (without the water inside) with a heat lamp attached. You can use cardboard boxes too.

It may be built on runners, with a wooden floor about six feet wide and ten feet long. Slope the top six feet high to four feet in the rear.
