The easiest way to remove the smell from a garbage disposal is to cut up a lemon and grind it up. Another easy way to rid any odors from the unit would be to pour a packet of lemon Kool-Aid into the disposal and grind that.

I use frozen lemon rinds to freshen the garbage disposal.

To really clean up the smell from your garbage disposal, you should take a whole lemon, and quarter it. Also get some ice, and run both the ice and the lemon through the garbage disposal. this will clean and freshen up the blades.

it always feels like a pity to put edible lemons in the disposal, so i always throw any citrus peels down there - it does just about as good a job as the quartered fruit and wont make you feel guilty ;)

I also disinfect with chlorine bleach periodically. It not only kills the bacteria, but also keeps the pipes clean, so there is less of a need to call in the plumber.

To rid your garbage disposal of odor, put several ice cubes in it and top them with some coffee grounds. Run the disposal. The ice will keep the grounds in the disposal long enough to deodorize the area. To keep it that way, use lemon quarters.
