Will using a garbage disposal harm your septic tank?

We are thinking about getting a garbage disposal but I have heard it is bad.

You should use your garbage disposal as little as possible to prevent things that are not easily broken down by the bacteria in your septic tank. The less food particles that go into the tank the better.

A garbage disposal will not "harm" your septic tank. It may actually be beneficial if used properly. If it grinds the food into small enough particles, that is best. Just remember that you should use it sparingly and keep your tank properly maintained.

Your-garbage-disposal won't harm your-septic-tank, but the liquid & solid waste coming out of your-garbage-disposal will cause your-septic-tank to back/fill-up faster, requiring you to have your-septic-tank pumped out more-frequently. Septic-tank-systems are designed/sized based on your-(pre-existing)-plumbing-fixtures. You are better-off composting & mulching such food/kitchen-(fruit/vegetable)-waste, rather than using an in-sink-garbage-disposal.

Using a garbage disposal with a septic tank is perfectly fine. Make sure you don't dump anything down the drain, such as bleach.
