A teacher can build self esteem by encouraging each student in whatever area he or she succeeds. Each student will have a special aspect that can be recognized. An atmosphere where students recognize others' talents will also build self esteem.

As a teacher its important to discover the strengths of our students. Emphasizing how good they are as something encourages them to try to get better at their weaknesses. There is also differentiated instruction that teaches to various abilities.

The best way is by making sure that students have quality work that they are successful with. This means you need to scaffold and differentiate instruction so that everyone can be successful, while still doing quality, challenging work.

I utilized a "Give that kid a hand" bulletin board in my classroom. Each time a student earned full credit on a class assignment (not homework, but a test of a quiz) their name was put on the bulletin board. Additional recognition was with stickers.
