Do dogs know what they look like?

Most likely they don't know what they look like or what they're breed looks like. They will however be more interested in dog in similar shape and size.

Yes. They recognize and get more excited when they see one of their own kind. When they are puppies in the same litter they recall having great experiences with that particular breed of dog. Many of them have the same character traits handed down through the genes.

Some smaller dogs or puppies will be intimidated by a dog of larger stature. For the most part dogs know about what size they are. There are occasionally some that think they are the size of a German Shepard when they are a toy dog. The opposite is also true. Large dogs can have small dog syndrome.
