Anyone that has a home has the right to sell it in any way that he or she wants. If the owner decides to sell it with just a for sale sign, he or she is less likely to gain attention as opposed to a realtor. A realtor will advertise and has more connections to potential buyers.

They sell them at hardware stores. But, I wouldn't put it out unless I was the legal and titled owner of the property!

No. There is more to selling a house than just putting up a for sale sign. There will be paper work to do and things to be verified.
