Ear infections are not symptoms of a cold but can be caused by a cold. An ear infection happens when your head gets plugged up and fluid gets trapped in your middle ear. This is most common in small children.

Yes, a cold causes mucus to collect in the drainage tubes running between the ear and the throat. This causes the pressure in the ear to change and therefore causes ear pain. If allowed to persist, this will sometimes become a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics to treat.

Ear infections are common with people who have sinuses that don't drain very well. This tendency can be from asthma, allergies or ear tube lengths or malformations.

Ear infections are not symptoms of a cold but a cold can be a cause of an ear infection. Due to the increased amount of mucus experienced during a cold it is likely for the congestion to cause infection in the ear.
