There are several reasons why this might occur. One of the most common reasons is that they may be getting ready to cut some molars and have some discomfort in their mouth. Have there been any big changes in your child's life lately? Sometimes children start sucking on their fingers for comfort as well.

There could be several general reasons for this behavior. A child sometimes does this if they are in pain, such as from an ear ache or if they are cutting new teeth. It may also be because they are feeling insecure and this is a comforting mechanism to help them calm down when put in a new situation.

Regressive behaviors like finger sucking in a four year old are generally caused by stress. The child could be worried about a new situation like starting school, or a change in the family, like a new sibling. Over time and with adjustment, the behavior is likely to disappear again.

It sounds to me that the reason they would do this is because they are trying to get attention from someone. Or it could be that the 4 year old is scared of something and this is their "security blanket" from what ever is scaring them, best thing to do is talk to them and see
