Why was my first period a brown discharge instead of red blood?

When blood dries it turns a brown color. It's likely that your lining didn't shed right away and dried out before descending.

You're not just releasing blood during your period. You're also releasing the lining of your uterus that builds up to prepare your body for a baby. Since you're not pregnant, that lining is released along with the blood and accounts for some of the brown.

My guess is that the spotting of old blood you experienced was not a full real period. It was your was your body getting ready to start menses. Like a practice round. Good luck!
