A group of senators planned the assassination of Julius Caesar because they resented his rise to power from military general to leader of the Roman Republic. They feared that he was a threat to the republican form of government. His assassination led to a civil war and the eventual takeover of his adopted son, Octavian, as Emperor of Rome.
