Why is trivia considered useless?

Many facts are useful, but "trivia" consists of isolated facts about frivolous things. These facts can be useful for winning trivia contests or impressing your friends, but they usually won't help you fix a car, or perform first aid, or earn a living, or understand the universe -- they've trivial.

Who considers trivia useless? What if you get into the cash cab? Wouldn't you thank your lucky stars that you did so much trivia?
