If the odometer is not working, also, the problem is related to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). This is a sensor bolted into the transmission near the output shaft to the right side. If it's just the speedometer that isn't working it will be related to the speedo head, itself.

More than likely its the instrument panel that went out. Your gonna have to go to your dealer to get it replaced because they have to program the new instrument panel. Expect to pay between $300 to $500 for the repair.

The speedometer on a Ford Taurus is controlled by a sensor in the transmission. The most likely causes of it not working is the failure of the sensor or the sensor coming unplugged. In either case it is an easy fix. Have your mechanic check whether the sensor has failed or come unplugged.

It probably just came disconnected. Some times the cable connecting the speedometer becomes loose from the wear and tear of the road. most of the time you can take the dash apart and just tighten the screw for the cable.
