For hardware problems, it's usually the CPU or GPU overheating (you'll see the screen flickering) or the hard drive grinding (you'll hear this). For software problems it's usually a virus running an illegal process, or conflicting device drivers.

The first culprit to investigate would be your operating system files and hardware device drivers. Make sure they are updated to the latest version. Another reason could a memory leak in one of your programs you are running. Finally, the computer might have some sort of malicious virus on it. Run an anti-virus program to detect and clean it.

Some reasons could be viruses, low ram capacity, and also spyware. Try running a virus scanner and then Disk defragmenter.

It could be a hardware issue like faulty memory (ram), hard drive, graphic's card, processor etc. It could be a software issue where the drivers for any of the hardware is causing the problem. To check the hardware there are a lot of applications online like memtest for memory diagnose.

Most of the time, when your computer freezes up, the main windows-thread receives an error it cannot handle. This is usually caused by over usage of hardware, or collisions in different soft- or hardware types. And there could be a million more reasons.
