Why is my hermit crab not coming out of its shell as much as it used to?

Don't panic, this is sign that there might be something wrong with your crab. He might be uncomfortable with the shell and does not want to move around as much. Make sure you give him a variety of shells to choose from. Also entice your crab with various treats and make sure he is happy.

Check the humidity in the tank. It may not be high enough for the crab. Also the air may be too cold as well. Climate is very important so you can invest in a heat/humidity gauge that will assist you with this issue. Also make sure they have a dish of water. This will keep him happy.

Hermit crabs like to be warm. They like fairly dry environments with available water to crawl through. They crawl around and hunt for food. If these things are not true, it may just be cold. It is probably not too big for the shell because it would come out of it completely.

Did you move the cage? Is he somewhere colder or sunnier? Did he lose a hermit crab friend? Did anything about his environment change?
