Why is my dog terrified of water?

It can be anything, for example: somebody threw him in the water or sprayed him with it and he remembers it as something bad since it was very unpleasant to him. Don't force him and when you are bathing him, use a wet glove/cloth or something he's least afraid of.

If your dog is really terrified of water than he probably has had a bad experience with water. It may just be that he just doesn't like water and finds it unpleasant to be wet. You can work on desensitizing him if you are very patient.

Your dog could have had a traumatic experience that involved water. Some dog's just hate baths and need repetitive baths to get them used to it.

Some breeds of dogs naturally love water, some breeds hate it. There are obviously exceptions to every breed, but labs usually love water and pit bulls tend to hate it. It all depends on the dog.
