Some of the same minerals exist in both soil and the mammalian body. This behavior could indicate a deficiency of a certain mineral in the dog's body that it is trying to replenish by consuming dirt. Or if excessive, this could indicate a behavioral delimna such as frustration that the animal expresses through an abnormal craving.

Many animals will instinctively eat dirt if some essential nutrient is missing from their diet. Their bodies need minerals such as salt and iron to function properly - just like yours. These minerals, and others, can be found in the ground. Unfortunately, your dog could end up ingesting undesirable substances. Try augmenting their regular food with a supplement.

Your dog is eating a lot of dirt because the dog may have a deficiency in its diet and is making up for it by eating dirt that contains what his diet lacks.

Mineral deficiencies or gastrointestinal problems are two of the main reason your dog may be eating dirt. Your dog also may simply be trying to get your attention!
