Why is mixing colors different for light than it is for paint?

Light is emitted, while paints are pigments that reflect light. Light is combined using the additive system. Paint is mixed using the subtractive method.

Light mixes by combining colors generated by sources, but the light of a paint's color is what's not absorbed by the paint, so you're getting a mix of unused colors.
