Why is documentation so important in program development?

My boss is always giving me a hard time about not documenting my progress.

If someone wants to duplicate your project later, it is helpful to know how you got to the end point. Also, your boss may want to keep tabs on you.

If you do not spell out the intent and purpose of program code, it will be difficult for others to understand or debug later. Documentation of progress to milestones is essential to determining productivity of an employee and for cost estimating and time line planning of when the project will be done.
