Its used in lots of places. Lots of engineering involves equations that control and predict the behavior of materials / systems. In all those cases, you may know some of the variables and wish to predict the output. Well, thats algebra. The other way around is also possible.

Here's one example: An engineer might be asked to determine the size of a support beam knowing only the amount of weight the beam needs to hold and the required length of the beam. This is an algebra problem. Also, algebra teaches the engineer to think critically.
