Satellite imagery is fascinating to people as they can access it from the privacy of their own home and engage in legal voyerism. It's the thrill of seeing "what you shouldn't be looking at" combined with the excitement of being able to use cutting edge technology which enables us to feel like we are part of the latest scientific breakthroughs.

Live satellite imagery is popular because people are natural voyeurs. It's like being a fly on the wall. The person using the technology is anonymous-usually. I don't think seeing your own house from space is what makes it popular. I think it's the ability to see things from God's perspective as well.
