A toddler can experience allergies and/or breathing problems at night. This can result in waking up often and distressing the child. A cold or asthma may be the culprit. Overstimulation during the day can carry into the night and disturb sleep patterns. Trauma or unresolved conflicts can exacerbate trying to sleep.

Teething and illness are a common cause of night waking. Also, when toddlers are learning new skills, such as walking, they actually will wake up in the middle of the night and will try to practice them instead of trying to go back to sleep. Usually it is temporary and they resume their normal sleeping patterns after a while.
