Fuel to air mixture could be off, carborator could need adjusting, or it could be old, or bad gas. if gas is fresh then take it to a mechanic.

The first thing I would do is to plug the spark plugs. Make sure they look like the engine is running clean. The should be soaked with gas or covered in carbon. If they are the engine is running rich and the fuel needs to be leaned out and the plugs replaced. Then make sure that the timing is correct.

A backfire is likely either caused by a timing issue or fuel problem. Do a good tune up and make sure your plugs are in good shape and gapped right. Make sure the engine is still in time. Then try adjusting the carb leaner and see if that helps.
