It could be a tumour, impaction, or pregnancy. Take your hamster to a qualified exotics vet (who specialises in rodents) to have him/her checked out. Tumours and impaction can be treated with medicine or surgery - neither is a death sentence. There may also be diet issues that you have to deal with.

Swelling in a hamster's stomach is often caused by a metabolic disorder, liver disease, tumours or cysts. A veterinarian can x-ray your hamster in order to tell if it's fluid or air and may be able to see or feel a tumour or cyst.

Your hamster is probably pregnant. If this is not possible he may be gaining weight this could be from lack of exercise, or what time of year it is. Heading into winter most rodents will slow their metabolism to gain some extra weight to prepare for winter. If this isnt possible consult with your vet for further advice.
