Alot of tiems as an animal ages the hair tecture changes and that causes to shed more at a time and more frequently. The hair gets thinner and more of it but it tends to fall out much easier.

He may just be getting older and therefore losing hair, or it may be getting a bit fatter and is shedding more hair as it is not needed for warmth.

The shedding of a dog happens in cycles. Your dog will shed less in the colder months and start to shed a lot in the summer. Your dog might be shedding also from being sick or from having a poor diet.
