Why does my dog cough like something is stuck in his throat?

Coughing or "hacking"could be caused by several things. Has your pup been vaccinated? Has he stayed at a kennel? Sometimes dogs can transmit Kennel Cough through other dogs at a boarding house.Check with your vet to make sure this is not something more serious. Could be a virus requiring antibiotics.

Your dog might have a tumor in his throat. Older dogs are sometimes found to have these so if it keeps on, see your vet.

My male dachshund has the same problem. He does it a lot when he drinks his water too fast but i have also noticed he does it when he has nothing in his mouth. It almost like a baby with air bubbles in its stomach and i have to pat him on the back to loosen it up.

It could be allergies, heart problems or even something as simple as tracheal irritation. If it is persistent you should take your dog to the veterinarian.

Your dog may very well have kennel cough. Take him to the vet for a look and appropriate treatment. Kennel cough is common but must be treated.

This could be caused by a hair ball. Try getting some hair ball remedy from the pet store. Or, talk to your vet.
