Worn piston rings may allow oil into the piston chamber. When the spark fires to cause the explosion of compressed air and gas, the oil also burns, causing smoke.

The description suggests that the smoke is black, and not white. The black smoke would tend to indicate that the car is passing oil past the piston rings.

During idling worn valve guides would allow a small amount of oil to seep by into the area above the cylinder, but not into it, once you press the gas pedal, the higher air flow rate would blow the oil into the cylinder where it would burn, creating the smoke.
