Why does furniture sold in catalogs have three dimensions?

I am looking at a furniture catalog and all of the measurements are in three dimensions, height, depth and width.

Having all three dimensions of furniture is very helpful to figuring out if it will fit in a particular space. Height refers to the length from the ground to the top, the depth is the measurement of how deep it is and width refers to how wide the piece is.

They usually put all three dimensions so that customers can measure the space that they plan on putting the piece of furniture in. It can also be used to determine is a piece will fit through a hallway or doorway.
