Why do I have to get pre-authorizations for procedures with insurance?

I have to get almost all things preauthorized with insurance.

This is a common practice with HMOs, Health Maintenance Organizations. By requiring pre-authorization, they ensure that you actually need the service, theoretically reducing abuse and thus cost.

This way your insurance company knows its costs and you know that they are going to be covered and your not going to be left with a large bill that your insurance doesn't cover.

It's probably time to switch insurance companies then. Most major procedures have to be checked with the Insurance Company because not all insurance companies cover everything. Most of the time the doctors office knows what your insurance will or will not cover. You shouldn't have to ask about everything. I suggest you get a better insurance company.
