Chest tightness can be a symptom of bronchitis, if accompanied by cold/coughing symptoms. Alternatively, if it is accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, or pain down the arm, it can be a symptom of a heart attack. For those under stress, it may signify an anxiety attack.

You could be having a stroke, or a heart attack when you feel your chest area tighten. You should go to your doctor asap.

From past experience, I associate chest tightness with bronchitis, or a possible asthma attack. My oldest has allergy induced asthma, and every time he would start to have an attack, chest tightness was a symptom. I, myself, have asthmatic bronchitis, and once again, chest tightness is a prevelant symptom.

Chest tightness can be a sign that your heart is not getting enough oxygen. This can occur at rest but more frequently with excercise. You need a medical evaluation of the symptom. An EKG and lab tests can be done to assess if there is any damage to your heart.
