In the fall there is less sunshine, and the cold weather causes the leaves to stop producing clorophyl which makes the leaves green.

Fall leaves change colors because the sugars needed to maintain green chlorophyll are cut off as the tree cuts off sap to prepare for colder weather. As the chloroplasts (they contain the chlorophyll) die, the chlorophyll is digested by the cell and all that remains are the sun screening pigments.
