Why do cats lick when you scratch them over the hips?

Lick themselves or lick your hand? If it's the first option, it means that the cat is enjoying, he/she is relaxed and wants to tell you. If it's the second, cats usually lick each other as a sign of frindship or trust, so they may be saying "you pet me, I will pet you too".

Cats lick when you scratch them over their hips because they don't particulary like it when you touch them. When they lick themselves that is their form of washing/cleaning themseves. You touching them bothers them a great deal.
