Warhol painted soup cans because at the time there was a lot of concern about mass production and mass media and he was visually demonstrating these issues.

Andy Warhol painted many items and social situations that did nothing but speak of mass culture. I believe he chose the soup can because it's simple, bright patterned label would translate nicely to the screen printing he liked to use. And that famous soup can spoke of both the mass consumer market and the comforts of home.

A central question among 20th century artists is "what does art consist of?" Soup cans are obviously a mechanical production from the soup factory with some graphic design elements. A painting is a piece of art. What then is a painting of soup cans? That's why he painted them.
