It was largely just fashion, which can be inexplicable (like 80's mullets or 70's bellbottoms). There was some element of showing off one's wealth with a giant wig, and of course a giant wig showed that you didn't have to work for a living and could walk around wearing one.

The fashion of wigs began because King Louis XIII of France and his son King Louis XIV wore wigs to hide the fact that they were balding.

There aer many reasons why this is evident. First, people shaved their heads to avoid picking up lice and wigs covered their baldness. Second the court of Versailles in France was the center of fashion for the world. When King Louis XIII started to lose his hair he covered his baldness (thus saving his virility) with long flowing wig.
