to show how much they loved Duran Duran. If you had posters on your wall in your bedroom, or you died your bangs blond just like John Taylor, that was one thing. But having 15 different buttons on your suspenders--now that was a true Duranie. Only a true fan displayed all their Duranie flare.

That's actually the original method of suspender attachment and is still considered more "proper" (provided the buttons are inside the waistband). The metal grippers also don't grip as well, anyway.
