Why did Maximilien Robespierre send so many people to the guillotine?

Robespierre was the driving force behind the Reign of Terror. This era was marked by the killing of those who were against the French Revolution, usually by sending them to the guillotine. The Reign of Terror finally ended when Robespierre and his supporters were arrested and killed. Robespierre himself was sent to the guillotine.

Initially it was to punish and eliminate his competition or those who might usurp him. As time went on it was to provide spectacle that would keep the people occupied.
