Why did a few large cities in India change their name?

I am talking about Bombay changing to Mumbai, Madras to Chennai, and Calcutta to Kolkata? Did any others change too?

The old names Bombay, Madras and Calcutta were changed for the following reasons ~ To revert back to the local names from anglicized names of British origin ~ To change any misspellings ~ To change from European names to Indian names Some cities that have changed their names are Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), Mysuru (formerly Mysore), Thiruvananthapuram (formerly Trivandrum) and Kochi (formerly Cochin)

This was due to demand of local people who culturally associated more with these changed names, and not with the original names. Bangalore also changed to Bengaluru.
