Why can't I get local channels in HD even though I don't have a HD cable box because I thought some HD channels are free?

First off you need an HD TV... second cable companies do offer some HD channels for free depending on the cable packages that you have. You cannot get these channels without signing up with a cable company.

Well there are HD channels being broadcast in a lot of areas. To watch them you need to attach a wireless antenna to an HD compatible tv or receiver.

It's true that some cable companies offer free high definition, or HD channels, for free. However, if your television is not high-definition, you will not be able to see the HD programming. If your tv is an older, CRT set, it is not HD-capable, and therefore you will not be able to see any HD programming.

Its because the signal Is sent in HD and your TVV is not able to read the signal without the converter box.

If your trying to get HD channels over the air, you need a converter box because older regular tvs can't tune in to HD channels.
