A lot of digestive fluids are produced in the stomach. These fluids are acidic in order to break down food before it passes into the small intestine. When these acids go into overdrive because of overeating or certain foods, the stomach becomes "upset. " An antacid absorbs some of digestive acids and eases the symptoms.

People are told to take an antacid when their stomach is upset to neutralize the ph in their stomach. The stomach is very acidic and the antacid acts as a base to cool this down. If not the stomach acid can damage your body and create more serious problems. You can develop stomach ulcers or worse.

when there is more of acid secretion in the stomach it causes burning sensation in the epigestric region. Antacids when taken, neutralise the acid in the stomach and help to get relief from pain. Some antacids not only neutralise exess acid but also do the coating of the inner lining of the stomach.
