Headphones are made cheap because that's what the average American consumer wants. Buy a good pair of headphones for a few hundred dollars, such as senheiser, and enjoy.

Manufacturers save money if they do less quality control. Try going to a musical supply store rather than Costco or wherever; it's pricier but worth it in the long run.

Headphone trade-offs are between comfort/weight and durability. Cord-stretching & frequently getting headphones off/on of your ears/head damages them. Wireless headphones trade the cord for (limited-life/rechargeable?)batteries. Heavy/"Studio" headphones can last years.

Simply put, it's so you have to buy a new pair once a month. Electronics companies can make a ton of money off of selling cheap products that have to be replaced really often. If you're serious about sound, try a brand like Shure or Sennheiser. It will cost more, but will last longer and sound better.
