I believe reason for camels being in the desert is that they originated there. They, over time, have adapted to their environment. Camels are found in zoos so they can adapt elsewhere. Camels can survive the heat, go long times without water and body is made to adapt to deserts.

Camels are found in the desert because they are naturally equiped for the temperature and climate of that type of environment. They store water in their humps and can go for long periods of time without needed a lot of water.
