The Battle of Mons was the first major battle of World War One. It was also one of the Battle of the Frontiers, the earliest battles fought by the British Expedtionary Force. However this battle did not have a winner as the BEF was forced to retreat by the Germans.

The Germans "won" the Battle of Mons in the end, but the British had successfully delayed them from advancing into France.

This battle was the first major battle of WW1, however there was no clear winner of this battle. The British were forced to retreat by the Germans, and actually kept retreating for two weeks. Before they launched into the First Battle of the Marne, in which the allies then won.

Technically the Germans won, because they pushed the British out of their position with their larger numbers. However, the British achieved their goal of delaying the Germans.
