Hans Lippershey, and Hans Janssen are the inventors of the common microscope. The two eyeglass makers are credited with its creation. It was very basic and used two eyeglass lenses to magnify an image.

During the first century AD glass had been invented and the Romans were the first to discover magnification with the use of curved glass that they called flea glass because fleas were among the first items to observe upon. The compound microscope was invented by two Dutch spectacle makers in 1590 by putting two magnification lenses together in a tube.
