The current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso, who was born in 1935 and was recognized to be the dalai lama in 1937. He is the most visible leader of Buddhism, however each branch has its own leader and he is only the leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

There are several schools of Buddhism, each with its own spiritual leader. The Dalai Lama is the best known but is the leader only of the Tibetan Buddhists. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso leads Kadampa Buddhists, for example, while Daisaku Ikeda heads the Soka Gakkai movement based in Japan. All Buddhist movements have a designated spiritual leader.
