Who is Scyld Scefing?

He appears in the opening lines of the poem Beowulf, where he is the mythical founder of the Scylding - a Danish royal line. His name is translated various ways, including "Shield Sheafson" or "Scyld, son of Sheaf. " There is very little known about him beyond what is in Beowulf.
