William Ramsay discovered neon along with Morris Travers in 1898. They were looking for new gases and distilled liquid air to find neon, an inert gas present in the atmosphere. Ramsay won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1904.

Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay and English chemist Morris M. Travers discovered neon in the course of their study of the fractional distillation of liquefied air. They had suspected that there was an element missing among the "noble gases." The discovery came in 1898, shortly after the pair discovered krypton.
