Fredrich Nietzsche used the word Ubermensch or beyondman. Then in 1903 George Bernard Shaw translated the word into a story and turned into superman. That brought the word in the popular language.

Originally Superman was a comic book character created by writer Jerry Siegel. He first appeared in 1938. He was meant to be a "super" version of a normal man.
