There are four main figures in this poem. Gilgamesh is the eponymous hero; his friend and doppelganger Enkidu; inn owner Siduri; sacred prostitute Shamhat; ferry-man Urshanabi; Ninsun, Gilgamesh's mother; goddess Ishtar; Humbaba, who serves earth god Enlil; and, of course, the people of city and creatures of the forest.
