In the winter the fan should turn clockwise at a low speed. Since warm air naturally rises, this will draw room air up and push warmer air down and out toward the walls. This will circulate the warm air around the room. Note that high fan speed will make you feel as if colder air is circulating through the room.

They should turn so that they force a downdraft. Take a piece of paper and hold it horizontally with the fan on high to determine your fan's direction.

You should have them blow air up towards the ceiling this mixes the warm air with the cold and does not create a breeze. It should also be set on low.
